Musical Fidelity A1 vintage first series amplifier
Audiophile classic, the original
The Musical Fidelity A1 was issued in 1984, and 40 years later is still a legendary integrated amplifier that gained cult status for its pure Class A design, warm sound signature, and unique aesthetic. It was designed by Tim De Paravincini and became an icon in the hi-fi world. The pure "less is more" approach translates in no equalisation board, no headphone input, one pair of speakers but a top level mm/mc phono preamp.
The A1 stands out with its sleek, low-profile chassis, which also functions as a heat sink. Unlike typical amplifiers, it has a flat, wide design with large cooling fins on the top to dissipate heat. This is necessary because the A1 operates in pure Class A mode, which means it runs hot even at idle. When we say hot, we mean hot. The amplifier top cover can reach up to 65° celsius, so nothing, and certainly not your own hand or your goldfish aquarium can stand on it. While this results in constant power consumption and heat output, it ensures an ultra-smooth and natural sound.
Rated at 20 watts per channel at 8 ohms, which may seem modest, its high-current capability provided by a toroidal transformer, allows it to drive many speakers surprisingly well, as long as you pick some decent sensitivity ones to pair them. The Class A topology minimizes distortion and provides an exceptional midrange, making it ideal for vocals, acoustic instruments, and jazz recordings. The bass is rich and full-bodied, while the treble remains smooth and detailed.
What made the A1 famous was its warm, rich, and natural sound. Many audiophiles describe its sonic profile as very tube-like, with a lush midrange, strong imaging, and a deep soundstage. It excels in musicality rather than sheer power, making it perfect for analytical listening and smaller spaces.
Due to its cult following, the A1 has seen several reissues and modern versions, of course we present here an original, collectible, first series model. The signature of this range lies in the side panels that were plain with no vent openings that came later, and the big capacitors laying in a radial layout.
An all time collector classic, easy to maintain, very documented and that competes with modern high-end amplifiers for a fraction of the price.
This example was restored in France with good Japan made Rubycon condensers, and a known weak point was addressed by replacing the cheap original volume potentiometer by a Blue line ALPS counterpart. The board does not show cold solder points, and of course as we opened it for inspection and cleaning, we reapplied a new layer of heat dissipating compound on the aluminium rail that liaises with the top cover.
Tested, cleaned, deoxydized.
Perfect working condition, see the photo gallery for cosmetic signs of patina and age.
