Cambridge Audio Azur 340A Special Edition amplifier

250€

The Cambridge Audio Azur 340A Special Edition (SE) is a landmark entry-level integrated amplifier that punches far above its weight class. Since its founding in London in 1968, Cambridge Audio has championed the "British Sound"—a philosophy of tonal purity and musicality. They famously introduced the world’s first amplifier with a toroidal transformer, a high-performance technology that remains a core feature of the 340A SE.

Produced between approximately 2007 and 2009 (so on the boundaries of our vintage selection), the 340A SE was a "hot-rodded" evolution of the standard 340A. The "Special Edition" designation brought significant refinements, including : an upgraded power supply using a larger, custom-designed toroidal transformer for better current delivery, high-grade signal capacitors and improved heat-sinking for thermal stability, an exceptionally low-noise preamp stage and circuit upgrades to the output stage that lowered the noise floor significantly.

These upgrades allowed it to deliver a more robust 45 watts per channel and better handle demanding speaker loads.

The sound rendition is widely described as articulate, punchy, and transparent. Audiophiles praise its ability to retrieve fine details with a "fast" and precise character, in rhythmic timing, making it as capable of handling the energy of rock as it is the delicate emotion of acoustic tracks. It offers a smooth, controlled treble that avoids the "brittleness" often found in budget components, delivering an engaging, lifelike performance.

For many, it remains the quintessential "first step" into true high-fidelity audio, offering a warm, engaging and real character.
