DENON DR-M22 cassette deck

220€

no-nonsense good choice deck

Renowned for pioneering digital audio recording equipment, Japanese audio giant Denon introduced the DR-M22 around 1985–1987. It stands out as one of the most mechanically balanced and musically detailed 3-head cassette decks of the mid-1980s hi-fi golden era.

The close loop dual capstan drives flywheels to maintain optimal, isolated tape-to-head contact. This mechanism drastically reduces wow & flutter while minimizing modulation noise. It uses 3 independent record, playback, and erase heads (using Denon's Super Frequency / SF head alloy). This allows real-time source vs. tape monitoring while optimizing gap widths for both recording dynamic range and high-frequency playback detail. The bias can be manually adjusted to fine-tune high-frequency response for varying tape formulations (Type I, II, and IV) while you record. And you can rely on a double Dolby noise reduction circuitry (B and C) to maintain low noise recordings.

The Denon DR-M22 strikes an exceptional balance between high-end audiophile performance and bulletproof reliability. Its closed-loop transport delivers rock-solid tape stability, while the 3-head monitor workflow lets you optimize bias settings instantly by ear. It remains one of the best value-for-money vintage 3-head decks for both cassette archival and critical recording.

Tested, cleaned. The rollers and belts are in perfect operative order from previous service. The tape path has been cleaned by the book with isopropyl only, the bearings lightly lubed with silicon-based formula, while the heads have been demagnetized using the Tascam pro tool.

Perfect working condition, see the photo gallery for cosmetic signs of patina and age.
