Hafler Model110 preamp and XL280 amplifier
An icon of american amplification
Soon on Vintage Note…
The pairing of the David Hafler Model 110 preamplifier and the XL-280 power amplifier represents a quintessential peak in American high-value audiophile engineering. Developed in the 1980s under David Hafler’s philosophy of straightforward, uncompromised circuit architecture, this combination delivers exceptional transparency, effortless dynamic headroom, and remarkable sonic precision without unnecessary coloration.
The DH-110 serves as a flexible, low-noise control center. Built around discrete transistor stages and low-distortion op-amp topologies, it boasts an impressive signal-to-noise ratio and ultra-low harmonic distortion. Purists appreciate its tone-bypass feature—allowing the signal path to remain exceptionally clean—alongside an exquisite phono stage with user-adjustable capacitance for turntable playback.
Complementing the preamplifier's clarity is the XL-280 power amplifier. Delivering 145 watts per channel into 8 ohms, the XL-280 incorporates Hafler’s signature MOSFET output devices and "Excelinear" circuit philosophy. Designed to minimize phase distortion and transient intermodulation (TIM), the amplifier features a massive power supply with split-channel capacitance, effectively functioning as a dual-mono setup sharing a heavy-duty toroidal transformer. This robust construction allows the XL-280 to handle demanding, low-impedance loudspeaker loads down to 1 ohm with unflinching stability and swift current delivery.
Together, the DH-110 and XL-280 form a balanced audio chain. The DH-110 passes delicate musical detail with accurate spatial imaging, while the XL-280 supplies tight, authoritative bass control and extended high-frequency air. The resulting sonic profile is neutral, punchy, and detailed—exposing subtle textures in complex orchestral passages or modern synth layers without fatigue. Decades after their initial production, these units remain beloved by vintage audio enthusiasts for their rugged reliability, modular layout, and faithful music reproduction.
