Kenwood Trio KA-4004 amplifier
The outsider
Build from 1973 to 1976 in the magic Trio period, this not so little amplifier must be set at the level it really deserves.
Real audiophiles will be open to explore a bit aside the japanese podium of Sansui, Luxman, Marantz, and discover wonders that were built by Kenwood or Pionneer in this very exciting period of the early seventies.
The engineering is really capable, with a clean and short circuit path and high-end components to minimize noise, hum and distortion. This was also one of the first use of shielded wiring. A relay protection is available, and the preamplifier can be bypassed.
That was for the internal. Now the sound and vision. This piece looks gorgeous and rock-solid, with the two-tone brushed metal front and the wood flanks fitted. Do note as well that we cared for the fragile black switch tips, you will see them missing or broken on lots of examples.
And now the session. This is so sweet, round and energic. Behind a curtain, we would think about a Sansui AU-101 or AU-505, but no… it's a Kenwood Trio! The available power is well enough for the delicate rendition of space, the imaging is on spot and the bass is great. Horns and vocals are captivating and untiring.
Well paired, the vintage audiophile will be pleased on jazz, acoustic, vocals, blues and all genres where a warm color is a sought-after plus. Come and listen to it, you won't be disappointed.
Tested, cleaned, deoxydized. The adjustments have been performed. The black switch tips are all present.
Perfect working condition, see the photo gallery for cosmetic signs of patina and age.
