Crafted in Baltimore, Maryland during the golden age of American hi-fi, the Polk Audio Monitor 5B (produced from roughly 1982 to 1988) stands as a landmark mid-sized bookshelf speaker. It represents the height of founder Matthew Polk’s quest to deliver audiophile-grade dimensional imaging and bass response from a compact cabinet without breaking the bank.

At the core of the 5B’s technical design is Polk’s famous Fluid-Cooled SL2000 Silver Polymer Dome Tweeter (often referred to as the "Peerless successor"), paired with a 6.5-inch trilaminate polymer driver for the midrange and lower frequencies. What truly elevates its engineering, however, is the addition of an 8-inch sub-bass passive radiator. Rather than utilizing a standard ported enclosure which can introduce chuffing or tubby resonances, the passive radiator uses internal air pressure to extend low-end extension and acoustic coupling, allowing the cabinet to behave like a much larger enclosure.

The sound signature of the Monitor 5B is celebrated for its warm, non-fatiguing musicality paired with exceptional spatial imaging.
