Sansui AU-101 restored
Little genius, great look, great sound
Produced in 1971, this Sansui is a little genius.
The basic tone controls, pass filters, loudness and even a mic entry are there, and it's enough.
We have a bunch of owners on the net praising for the qualities of this amplifier, all of them tell the same and they are damn right.
The sound is full and rounded, providing an impressive capability at the lower end of the spectrum, while the high frequencies are crystal clear. You surely not have to be picky about the specs card, it reads only 15w on 8 ohms but it sounds more like the double, it's impressive, even on large cones.
Mellow, warm, smooth but super detailed, it sounds cheerful with every musical style, but vocals and horns are just to die for. Black face and wood flanks are very classy, as the size is just a bit below the 43cm DIN, to make it precious and space-savvy on your mid-century sideboard.
The cosmetic and functional condition is very good, the amplifier has always received proper attention and maintenance. Restoration was properly managed with selected components: Nichicon Gold, Elna… the main board is very clean and the amplifier works flawlessly without a crack or hiss.
This little genius deserved more than plain screws to connect your speakers, we fitted brand new insulated banana jacks.
See the photo gallery for potential cosmetic signs of patina and age.
