Sony CDP X222ES cd-player
An affordable ES series musical player
Started in 1965 with only a couple of amplifiers, the selected ES (for "Extremely High Standard") was the epitome of Sony Hi-Fi components. Build quality, design, features, innovative solutions and new patents, and a selection of the best components were expressed into a short number of products, that commanded surprisingly high prices "for a Sony".
Fortunately, results were delivered and except for some poseurs, audiophiles around the world acclaimed the achievements of this range.
At the entry of the 1991 ES cd-player range came the X222ES, and even if it cannot pretend to the fame (and price) of the upper models, there is a major leap between those and the regular players.
Full of features, solidly build, but first and foremost very musical, this player is one to consider.
The spectral balance is very even, the rendition lively and transparent. We found this player open, light and fresh; the transitions are agile as well. Some critics pointed out some weak imaging, but as our sessions are testing the device with one of our DACs, this does not seem to stand out in this configuration.
The digital output is optical.
Finished in black.
We have just serviced the device against the usual "lazy tray" effect; and replaced the square profile tray belt, to ensure years of smooth usage. It is a time consuming operation, not a surprise you can see lots of these working lousy.
Delivered with digital copy of the user and service manuals. A Sony remote control is present, it pilots the player while it is one of a complete system, not the original one coming with the player.
Fully cleaned, tested, deoxydized and sanitized unit.
Perfect working condition, see the photo gallery for potential cosmetic signs of patina and age.
