Dynaco D20XL loudspeakers
Rare and exotic model
The D20XL loudspeaker represents the late evolution of one of America’s most influential hi-fi brands, Dynaco. Dynaco was founded in 1955 on the East Coast of the United States, in Philadelphia, by David Hafler and Ed Laurent. The company became famous for making high-quality audio equipment affordable to a wide audience, especially through its legendary DIY amplifier kits and elegantly simple loudspeaker designs.
The Dynaco D20XL was introduced at the end of the brand’s most active period in loudspeaker production, positioned as a compact two-way bass-reflex speaker for small to medium listening rooms. Unlike the earlier sealed-box Dynaco models, the D20XL used a front ported cabinet to extend low-frequency response while keeping a modest enclosure size. It featured a classic two-driver layout—woofer and cone tweeter carefully tuned for balance, efficiency, and musical coherence. The 20XL was aimed at listeners who wanted true hi-fi performance in an unobtrusive, bookshelf-friendly format.
Production of the D20XL took place mainly during the late 1970s, a transitional era when Dynaco was adapting to new market expectations and more modern loudspeaker alignments.
If you look for a smooth, non-fatiguing sound, with capable bass for its size, and the “East Coast” tonal warmth, this Dynaco D20XL is one to consider.
