National Technics SU7300K amplifier
Brilliant and not black!
We are in 1978 when National Technics present its model range, strong in turntables, tape decks but also a pair of amplifiers, the 7300 and 7700. Available in Silver but also on the K finish. The K in the model name stands for "Dark", indeed the front panel is a subtle very dark grey, but not full black, that combines beautifully with the chrome buttons and the light yellow background of the analog VU-meters. A good note to please the eye, the VU sensitivity is selectable, so even at low volume, you can see those needles frantically dancing. This is what vintage is about! This stunning look is completed by the black cabinet that, a surprise at this period, is still made of wood.
Reviews are enthusiast and positive for this amp, and the first surprise comes from the specs. It is rated "only" 41 watts at 8 ohms, but the construction, the heavyweight transformer and the oversized dissipation radiators seems that it is perhaps more a marketing decision that the one the engineers had in mind. A measure at the bench may reveal a bit more watts there. Apart from this, the layout and the circuitry is also clever and clean, with very good parts identification for the service technician.
Never lacking kick, allowing to keep the big power button low, the sound is very satisfying. Upfront, dynamic and full, we had a pleasing session, keeping the amplifier below the extreme limits, where it clearly does not want to stay without getting more agressive. The phono entry is very refined in terms of signal/noise conception, and is one of the only 4 entries available: 1 phono, 1 tuner, 2 tapes, and that's it. A loudness completes the specs for low volume or headphones listening.
While not being the most expected brand for amplifiers, Technics managed to deliver a good sounding and good looking item. Recommended by Hi-Choice in their annual review.
Tested, cleaned, deoxydized.
Complete maintenance done.
Two small (3mm) scratches on the front side panel.
