Musical Fidelity M1 DAC Digital to Analogue Converter black
A reference DAC, perhaps the best vintage one at this price range
When you want to play good digital sources, high-resolution files are not enough. You have to feed that digital signal in an analogue way into your vintage system.
Doing this as an audiophile means choosing a proper DAC (Digital to Analogue Converter). Which is not easy: the price range of DACs is goes from a few dozens of euros to several thousands, and its not only a matter of picking one your pockets can afford. First advice is to avoid too cheap boxes from unknown actors (despite the opinion of a little bit too enthusiasts - we mean sponsored - youtubers).
Musicality is the key, and a few performers like this Musical Fidelity M1 Dac are just above the pack in this price range. In 2012, it was awarded best in class in the "What-Hifi" annual awards, and still used as a comparison basis the following years. Its big, it's seriously built and versatile, with its entries accepting optical, coaxial, usb and even XLR.
Musical Fidelity introduced the excellent 'smart data-reclocking’, their label for the asynchronous USB control, to eliminate at best any jitter. This ample box allowed the engineers at Musical Fidelity to embark a quality, filtered, internal power supply.
Even complex high-resolution audio files are managed in an ordered presentation, letting details, space and musicality enter your vintage amp for the pleasure of your ears.
Well finished with its aluminium cast body, it is sized to look like a real piece of audio gear and not a box of matches. It will adapt very well to your vintage system if you want to feed files rather than physical support and make your CD's sound definitely better.
