Sony PS-4750 direct drive turntable
Solid technology, space age looks, premium cartridge
With such a massive and talented R&D department in the seventies, Sony was able to adopt a straightforward problem-solution approach. A perfect example with this turntable born in 1974. The identified problem here was the external vibrations, produced by the room or the sound level, and that despite the shock absorbers and feet, were able to affect the rendition. The engineers identified that those vibrations and resonance phenomenons were transmitted by the body of the turntables that were still for the majority in wood.
The problem was hence the density of the material itself, and nobody would ever accept to have in his living room a radical approach of a base plinth made of concrete. So, Sony developed his proprietary solution, the SBMC (Sony Bulk Mould Compound) in the construction of it's turntable cabinet. Together with the use of servo-controlled direct drive DC motor, this new material with its unique acoustic and vibration absorption properties provides an excellent signal to noise ratio. An unusual frequency generator (FG) component of the servo system, contributes substantially to the exceptionally low degree of wow and flutter.
Still focussed on their vibration topic, Sony engineers completed the solution by equipping the Magnedisc magnesium-based platter with innovative rubber insulation mats, rather than a complete rubber disc, that will isolate externally caused mechanical vibrations that would have an adverse effect on the quality of reproduction, and also provide a distinctive "space age look" signature to the product. Also original and good looking is the strobosscope reading that uses calibrated holes illuminated by an orange led light.
The high compliance, low friction tonearm is provided with a precisely engineered anti-skating compensator for proper tracking and superb reproduction throughout the audio spectrum.
A very precise, durable and good looking turntable, built to last and impress.
This example reached us in a very good condition for age, with minimal markings on the dust cover, and a perfect platter condition, inside and outside (the speed control is based on a magnetic stripe inside the platter that should remain unscratched).
The moulded body is very clean as well, the cartridge is the reliable ADC QLM Mk III with a brand new stylus.
Cabling being fully remote, a new good quality stereo Cinch and a mass cable were fitted.
A digital copy of the service manual is available.
Tested, cleaned, deoxydized.
Perfect working condition, see the photo gallery for cosmetic signs of patina and age.
