Sony MDS-JE520 MiniDisc player/recorder to repair

Sony

40€

This Sony MDS-JE520 MiniDisc player/recorder was a top seller in price/quality ratio. This example was working good but a stick minidisc cartridge did not slide open properly and was stuck inside. Now the ejection mechanism does not operate. Maybe just a belt or a sensor, if you are gifted in small mechanical operations, you may be able fix this easily and end with a nice machine for small money.

Sony

70€

Sony direct drive turntable to repair or for parts. Complete without headshell and cartridge. Good looks expect one of the dust cover rear corner, broken plastic but the cover operates. Converted to 220 volts, new transformer.

The turntable turns on but do not spin. Perhaps a bad solder or the servo control chip. A Sony identical replacement chip is provided. The service manual is provided.

If you are skilled in electronics probably a nice projet. The image of the turntable is for illustration only.

Is vintage gear more suitable for a music style in particular?

As we already explained, we search components offering a sound signature: warm, round, punchy, sweet …

This signature has more significant benefits in pop, rock, jazz, soul or funk. It is mainly with vocals, guitar, saxophone, bass guitar, horns but also piano that the competitive advantage of vintage equipment shines.

That does not mean you are off topic if your taste goes for classical, house music, electro, hip-hop, metal…
